Re: 2 upcoming public service events in Warren County and surrounding areas

On Sunday October 3, 2010 Morgan’s Canoe Livery will again host the Little Miami Triathlon. The first canoes hit the water at 9:00 AM and the last bike typically crosses the finish line at 3:00 PM or so. We will again be in need of amateur radio operators for communications support along the bike course. The bike course starts and ends at Ft. Ancient State Memorial between Oregonia and Lebanon in Warren County. The course extends north to the southern edge of Caesar Creek State Park and returning south to Ft. Ancient. This event draws usually around 1000 participants and is on mostly county and township roads with a couple spots on State Route 350. As an added challenge this time Ward Koble Road has just been resurfaced with tar and gravel so it will likely be a source of issues. This event is typically well covered with 12 operators and is conducted on simplex.

With the situation on Ward Koble I would like to add additional staffing as we usually end up doing the sag transport and I expect multiple flat tires due to the fresh stone. A 50w Mobile Radio and gain antenna is preferred, but lesser equipped stations will not be turned away as we can still position you accordingly. Operators are requested to be on location by no later than 9:00 AM if on the course, and 8:00 AM if in the park.

I only have thus far myself and 2 others for this event. Please respond ASAP.

New this year on Saturday October 16, 2010 at Caesar Creek State Park will be the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s inaugural run of The Eurand CF Cycle for Life.

This event is unique in that it will be on 3 simultaneous courses consisting of a 21 mile course, a 32 mile course, and a 65 mile course. The 65 mile course is of course going to be the most challenging. It will be on roads in 3 different counties (Warren, Clinton, and Greene) and extends as far out from the park as State Route 68 at Interstate 71 on the outskirts of Wilmington, OH. The 32 also crosses in to Greene County but the 21 is strictly in Warren County. This event has never been done before so we have no estimation of the number of riders nor the expected workload to be placed upon us. Due to these issues I would like to staff heavy and not need everyone to work their tails off rather than staff light and get hammered. This event will be on repeaters (frequencies yet to be determined) and will go all day. So far I only have a handful of stations committed and a couple more that were waiting on work schedules at the time of my first email.

Start time for the riders is 8:30 PM with a course closure set for 2:30 PM.

The list as I have it thus far is as follows:

N8XGA
KC8RMT
N8ICS
N8UCL (Probable)
KC8STE (Probable)
KB8UEY

If you would be available for either event please respond to this email or give me a call so I can start putting together assignments and see where we stand.

This antenna brings a new meaning to the phrase SWR (Standing “WAVE” Ratio) J

SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific has developed a technology that uses the magnetic induction properties of sodium chloride (salt) in sea water to create UHF/VHF/HF antenna.

Bad to the Bone Duathalon September 18th

September 4, 2010 by

Hello all,

Once again the Bad to the Bone Duathlon will be held at Big Bone State Park on Saturday September 18th. The race consists of a run through the trails at Big Bone State Park and a 25 mile bike ride through Rabbit Hash Kentucky. The organizers of the race are once again asking for amateur radio assistance.

They would like to place operators along the course who could spot and relay information on the position of the participants and also if anybody would need any assistance along the
course. We are in need of a couple of more operators to place along the route to give them as much coverage as possible. The race will begin at
8:30 am and should be over by noon that Saturday.

If anyone would like to assist with this event we would love to have you. If you are interested you can contact me by responding to this email or by email at tlawrence@zoomtown.com. You can also call my cell phone at 859-743-0524 and I frequently monitor the 925 repeater and the 147.375 repeater in Northern Kentucky.

Please let me know if you would like to participate as we could use a couple more volunteers.

Thanks,

Tim Lawrence
