Annual WARN Weather Spotter Training
![]()
Updated by Mike Nie, W8VMX at WARN
The annual severe weather spotter training sponsored by the Weather Amateur Radio Network has been scheduled for Friday, March 30 at 7:00pm. After many years at the old location, we are excited about a change of venue. This year the training will be in the Golder Conference Rooms at Bethesda North Hospital at 10500 Montgomery Road. Up-to-the-minute information on the class can be located at WARN website. As always, amateur radio operators are encouraged to attend this spotter training session, but it is open to the public, so you do NOT have to be an amateur radio operator to attend. The same training content is included as all spotter classes taught by the National Weather Service office in Wilmington.
With the change in venue, we’ll have to keep an eye on how many people will attend. So, we’re doing online registrations for the class to track how many people will be there. Please register each person that will attend. We’re only asking for 3 pieces of information – Name, phone number, and email address. The sooner you register, the better.
We’ll be updating the training page referenced above with more information on the new venue in the coming weeks.
We think everyone will like our class location. We’ll send updates as necessary.

Please see the WARN website for the announcement.
Note the *change of venue* and the request to register so WARN can comply with the person-limit of the room(s).
This announcement is going to ham radio operators before other members of the public.

Butler County ARA (BCARA) Special Event Station
THE BUTLER COUNTY AMATEUR RADIO ASSOCIATION (BCARA), will be conducting an amateur radio “special event” February 18-26, 2012 to commemorate a historic Washington’s Birthday amateur radio message relay which was conducted on February 22, 1916 by members of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL); formed in 1914; and members of the Radio League of America (1915-1921).
The special event will be conducted from BCARA’s club station W8WRK located in the original station building of Special Land Station “8ZU” (1915-1919) which was one of the twenty-seven primary receiving and sending stations used for the February 22, 1916 radio message relay!
For more information on this special event station operation, please go to www.bcara.net
Cincinnati-Dayton Red Cross Ham Radio Support
Final REMINDER! Please use the “Surveymonkey” RSVP link if you’re sticking around for some grub after the meeting, as I need to know if we’ll be close to the number I gave the place. Thanks!
(Current RSVPs: N8TFD, N8PEE, KC8HQT, N2TUN/N2TUJ, KD8ILV, N8JBL, N8MDH, KD8PAT, W8NFM, KA8DME, KB0SLY, K8EAF, W8WTD, KC8KXC.)
——————–
As some of you may know, the Cincinnati and Dayton Area Chapters recently consolidated operations, including Disaster Services, to form a Region with this map:
http://www.dac.redcross.org/about/service-area
Also, Red Cross has demonstrated some flexibility towards what an acceptable background check can be (which may not be required in some circumstances shorter than 6 days):
http://www.arrl.org/ares-el?issue=2011-07-20#toc08
The result is a massive 36-county area in 3 states, across 8 ARES districts (OH-3, OH-4, OH-7, OH-8, IN-6, IN-9, KY-7, KY-8), with hopefully a lot of amateur radio operators willing/able to serve if needed.
Before this consolidation occurred, the generosity of a Red Cross donor allowed for the construction of a “ham radio room” at the Cincinnati Area Chapter. And, our volunteer efforts all “roll up” under the same “org chart” now.
The “ham radio coordinators” for both the Dayton and Cincinnati Chapters have spoken, and decided this would be a good time for an Open House at the Cincinnati Region office, and an opportunity to break bread after (at a location “on the way home” for anyone coming from north).
The Disaster Services Director for the combined operation (Fran O’Shaughnessy) will speak briefly to all in attendance — this is an excellent opportunity for Cincinnati-area hams who have not met her yet.
Here are the details:
October 21 Meeting
WHERE: 2111 Dana Ave. Cincinnati, OH/45207 (within feet of I-71)
WHO: any currently Red Cross affiliated ham radio operator, or anyone who might be interested in serving in the future
WHEN: “tours” at 7pm, quick business mtg at 730pm, eyeball QSOs follow
After Meeting:
WHERE: http://www.champps.com/restaurantinfo.aspx?location=champps-west-chester — we have the “party room” reserved under my name
WHO: anyone!
WHEN: 930pm – ???
If you are coming to the AFTER meeting, please RSVP: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7HNP8DZ
RSVP is *NOT* necessary for the meeting/open house, just for headcount at the restaurant.
Thanks for your interest…Red Cross nationally is typically the “main consumer” of amateur radio services annually.

Bike MS: Venture the Valley 2011
Provided by Steve Lewis at QCEN
Bike MS: Venture the Valley 2011 is a fully supported, two-day bicycle ride through some of the most scenic countryside and quaint small towns in Southwest Ohio. The figure-eight route will start, finish and overnight at Camp Kern in Oregonia, Ohio. Riders will have the option to choose from a 25-mile, 50-mile or 75-mile route.
Volunteers are needed at the start/finish, fixed checkpoints, and to ride in designated support vehicles throughout the weekend. There are a lot of logistical challenges on an all-day multi-county bike ride, so please lend your time and talents to this cause!
Required equipment for this includes a 25 or 50-watt VHF mobile and appropriate antenna.

Communicators needed – East Fork Triathlon & Duathlon on 08/07/2011 (Sunday)
The local amateur radio community is again being asked to provide communicators for this event. You are receiving this message because you volunteered last year or you are listed as a Clermont County RACES member . Please let me know if you have an interest in volunteering again this year. If so, let me know if you have a location preference.
Our function is to monitor parts of the bike course for emergencies, provide athlete status on the course if requested, and provide communications interoperability if needed. Volunteers should be able to operate from their vehicles parked in locations near and along the course although some additional leg work with handhelds may be needed at some locations to adequately monitor the course. Some locations may also have interaction with served agencies (Clermont County Communications Center, HFP Racing, Clermont County Sheriff, Ohio Department of Natural Resources – Park Rangers).
VHF (2M) communications capability is a requirement and UHF (70cm) is a plus. Our involvement will run from 7:45 am to approximately Noon. Volunteers need to arrive in the general area between 7:15 am and 7:30 am.
All volunteers are invited (but not required) to stay for the post-race food & drink at the beach area.
Anyone interested in volunteering or wanting additional information can contact me via E-Mail kb8qxq@arrl.net.
